CPU vs GPU: what to upgrade first
How this toolkit fits together
A balanced build starts with knowing whether the CPU or GPU is the limiter at your resolution. The bottleneck calculator answers that with a percentage and upgrade tabs. The FPS calculator estimates frame-rate bands for a pairing. The PSU calculator sizes wattage with headroom so a GPU upgrade does not brown-out the system. CPU and GPU tier lists rank parts by the same internal scores so you can compare “one step up” without mixing review methodologies. The upgrade advisor turns a bottleneck-aware pairing into concrete CPU or GPU picks.
At 1080p the CPU usually matters more; at 4K the GPU dominates. That is why the main calculator reweights CPU/GPU by resolution (60/40 at 1080p, 40/60 at 1440p, 20/80 at 4K). Use the toolkit in that order: balance → FPS goal → power → tier shortlist → buy.
Published validation MAE
On our Afterburner validation set (three correctly configured builds × three games at 1440p Ultra), MAE is 6.2 percentage points between calculator bottleneck % and implied bottleneck from measured GPU utilization (n=9). Typical AAA titles without CPU-extreme engines sit near 5.0 pp MAE; best cases are often within 2–4 points. BIOS misconfig is excluded from that MAE and diverges much more. Toolkit FAQ
Are these tools the same as the bottleneck calculator?
They share the same hardware score database as the homepage bottleneck calculator, but each tool answers a focused question — estimated FPS, PSU wattage, tier ranking, or upgrade picks — instead of a full bottleneck percentage with upgrade tabs.
How accurate are the toolkit numbers?
For standard gaming configs (XMP, Resizable BAR, typical AAA at 1440p/4K), our bottleneck estimates track measured GPU utilization within roughly 5–8 percentage points in Afterburner-style checks. Treat results as planning guidance, not a live diagnostic. See our accuracy deep-dive and methodology for limits.
Which tool should I use first?
Start with the main PC Bottleneck Calculator if you want a CPU/GPU balance percentage. Use the FPS calculator for expected frame rates, the PSU calculator before a power-supply purchase, and the tier lists or upgrade advisor when comparing parts.
Do I need an account?
No. Every tool is free, runs in the browser, and does not require registration.
